NOT Materiality, 2015-2018

These works were inspired by research stemming from the question “What happens when things look different than they feel?” NOT Materiality is an exploration in fusing visual and tactile senses in ways that do not meet initial expectations. Throughout the manipulation of materiality, imagery, and environment, the viewer is met with physical matter that opposes their memory of reality and heightens their visual and tactile perception.

As humans, 85% of our perception occurs through our visual sensory receptors. IN early childhood development we begin to associate certain things with certain appearances, yet it is impossible for these elements to always alight. NOT Materiality is an exploration in extreme misalignment to study the potential of creating new associations. Creating a non-natural visual and tactile pairing creates a commonality within the people experiencing this phenomena due to the sheer fact that the experience is new to everyone.
