Mirror and monofilamnet
The Succurro Pathways
East Meredith, NY
2023

I spent three weeks living in a tent on the land where this work now lives. My patterns, perspective, and process, all shifted. I was reminded that change is both something new and a coming home.

I created three installations on the trails. Each reflect qualities and patterns that were necessary for me to study in this time of transformation. I was wrestling with my constricting unconscious beliefs of architecture, nature, gender, race, and ornament within me and around me. I observed how these beliefs inhibit creativity to move through me and utilized art making to unravel the rigid mind.

The mirrors are a method for playing with light as material - a way to make the invisible visible. The mirrors both reflect and project, evoke and invoke, dazzle and dissolve. In their ability to be both, they also become neither, and something uncategorizable emerges simultaneously in the art and the artist.

2020This Boundary Is Imaginary.
You Can Visualize The Pathway Through.
You Have The Agency To Allow It To Dissolve.

This site-specific work is part of my ongoing research to fuse the body, space, and visualization to access and transform energetic pathways. In the process of creating the work unconscious mental connections become visible and I gain new insights. My hope is that this energetic quality will ripple out and also occur for those who experience the work. The textile is installed as a boundary at the bottom of a spiral staircase at Jefferson Market Library. If the viewer can visualize their passage through they move upwards. The purpose of this is to unlock access to the ability to utilize visualization to progress.

Vellum, ink, photo, and cotton thread
2019

100 Days is the first of a series of personal mapping projects. These projects are case studies for developing methods that facilitate self awareness and structures that counteract avoidance of truths. A mapping project begins when I identify an area that could use attention. The physical representation of the project aids in the process of self realization. The work (both the process and the outcome) becomes the mirror and once the reflection is seen change begins to occur.

Natural dye, organza, cotton paper, plexiglass, and monofilament

Spring Break Art Fair
625 Madison Avenue, NYC

2017

Contrasted against the office architecture of New York City, this installation was the beginning of a five year series called Solid Liquid, Ice, Melt, Repeat.

I created natural dye and then froze it into ice, which was then melted onto organza and paper. This process was an exploration in capturing the passage of time in a print and studying how different materiality facilitates different speeds and captures different memories.

Visualizing these marks and how they relate to each other was the beginning of a long pursuit in working to understand our ever changing relationship to time.

	Invisible Place

Monofilament

2016

Invisible Place explores the intangible aspects of our reality. To be invisible is to be incapable of being perceived by the eye. The invisible is considered the unseen or the spiritual world. Through the process of creating Invisible Place, I studied the physical and emotional experience of grieving. The laborious practice of making lace everyday gave me a physical outlet for my grief and created space to be in the present. I paired the intense lace making process with the invisible material to explore the relationship between what we feel and what we see.I have created each of these works from a 19th century bobbin lace pattern. I use unconventional material and scale to bring the unknown into the equation. The pattern acts as a map for the process, yet the outcome is never fully predictable. Just like our experience of living, it is unclear what the piece will become until the process is over and the lace is unpinned and taken off the pattern.

Being Nomadic
Synthetic and natural fibers
Various Locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn

2015 - 2017

Being Nomadic is a series of soft sculpture installations that abstractly represent humans, creatures, and spirits. They do not embody armature, therefore without an external support they tend to cave in on themselves, creating new form and defining space. Each installation heightens perspective on both the soft sculpture and its environment because the pairing creates a vision of contrast or camouflage and feelings of familiarity and absurdity. This perspective should vary for all who encounter the work for everyone has a unique way of perceiving the world. It is the sensory experience of the entity in an environment that allows the viewer to gain additional perspective on the entity itself.

2023

Landscape Artifcats is a series of objects I created while facilitating a week-long workshop in utilizing collaborative creative practice to mourn those we have lost, and prepare for the loss of lovedones in hospice, by cultivating transformation within ourselves. We explored the notion that time is not linear and took practical action in the present to make peace with the past and the future.

As the week unfolded, I felt a strong energetic pull towards the river. As I continuously walked the river, a path became more and more emergent. This silent ritual became a moment to listen and become in tune with the sound of the steady river. A time to get to know the trees on this path and learn from their wisdom. Fallen trees and river rocks provided moments for balance and imbalance to engage with the ebb and flow of human existence. I
I began to collect small tokens of the landscape. Back in the studio, these elements seemed to guide me to adorn them in ways that celebrate their energetic function. Each work is meant to be physically interated with as it holds an energetic function for bodies in space.

Body Language is a study of how process driven creation can inform a method for connecting to innate creativity. This project tests, firstly, how light, color, geometry, sound, meditation, and body movement can aid a person in achieving embodiment and secondly, how we can utilize that state to process mental information and develop a healthier mind body relationship.

Body Language explores how we can develop creative practice methods that facilitate a deeper knowing of oneself and their environment. It is in many ways a process of deconditioning from the constructs that do not serve us, while also reconnecting with the learning and structures that do. In this research, I work to make hidden emotions seen: the invisible becomes visible, and through this process visibility serves as a catalyst for change.

	Inhabitable Lace

Industrial fishing line
2016

Inhabitable Lace is a nomadic place of rest that can exist in natural or built environments. To create this work, I have manipulated the scale and materiality of the historical bobbin lace pattern, Little Hearts Insertion, to change the functionality of lace and the viewer’s physical relationship with the subject matter. The user of Inhabitable Lace is suspended in the world by the support of a single ethereal piece of lace. As humans, we move through space and time with many intricate and invisible support systems. The creation and nomadic installation of Inhabitable Lace aims to give viewers the dual experience of visualizing a human existing without support and then discovering the structure’s invisible systems. While we may sometimes feel that we are living an individual existence, there is a network of past, present, and future systems that influence our experience and perceptions of that experience.

	Becoming Branch
The Swimming Hole Foundation
Bearsville, New York

2022

I began my nature-guided practice at a very young age when I used to dance on the beach as the waves crashed on me. In these moments I delighted in how the sound and the ocean’s force influenced my movement. Since then I have had an undeniable gravitational pull towards exploring the feedback loop between humans and the natural world. Recently this has often begun with a relationship to a tree. The tree becomes a portal to then communicate with the land on which it is rooted.

During a project in Woodstock, NY in 2022 I expounded on the connection between nature and innate creativity, and I focused more on the landscape at large. I learned balance from the tress, harmony from the wind and the leaves, grounding from the mountains, and transformation from the lake. The notion that a sequence of experiences evokes transformation has always been of interest in my work, and this project brought the idea to the forefront.
